Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science

This museum is one of the leading attractions in Tallahassee. There is a natural habitat zoo, several historic buildings and environmental center here. The goal of the museum is to educate people on the Beg Bend area’s natural and cultural history.

Several exhibits are available to see, with one of the more popular being Big Ben Farm. The exhibit shows you what rural life in northern Florida was like during the 1800s. You will see a gristmill, gardens, house, animals and farm buildings.

Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park

In addition to being a Florida State Park, this attraction is also a historic site and botanical garden. There are 18 historic buildings on the site. The park was established in 1823 and is renowned for its camellias and azaleas, along with many other trees such as Japanese maples, dogwoods, and cypresses. The Native Plant Arboretum features Florida flame azaleas, English dogwood, Eastern red columbine and more. Some of the most popular activities at the gardens include hiking, fishing, canoeing, bicycling and bird watching.

Mission San Luis de Apalachee

This historic site was formerly a Spanish Franciscan mission that was built in 1633. Although the mission’s buildings were destroyed, several of them were later reconstructed, including the blockhouse, the fort, a typical Spanish home, the convent, the church and a couple of others. You can view 300-year-old artifacts and visit the buildings to learn more about what mission life was like.

Lake Talquin State Forest

This state forest is comprised of 17,491 acres. This multi-use park shares resource and environment needs with recreation. The goal is to strike a balance between reforestation, habitat restoration and outdoor recreations. There are many different trees in the forest including oak, maple, and hickory, along with numerous animals like turkey, deer, and bobcat. Some of the most popular activities including picnicking, horseback riding, hiking, camping and bicycling.

Tallahassee Antique Car Museum

This car-themed museum first opened in 1996 and in 2007 moved to its current facility. The main building is comprised of 100,000 square feet where mainly American-made cars are on display in addition to items celebrating and representing American culture. Including in the over 140 automobile collection are three Batmobiles and Abraham Lincoln’s funeral hearse.
